Shona Stewart
Shona Stewart has been working as a registered psychologist since 1994 and has been a Member of the Australian Psychological Society since 1997.
Shona has over 25 years of experience which includes working as a School Counsellor for the Department of Education and Training for 12 years where she helped students, teachers, parents and families achieve the best learning, social and emotional outcomes, creating an environment for students to find their path to a successful adult life. Seeking new challenges and a desire to focus on working with adults, couples and organisations, Shona started a private practice in 2005 and established Stewart Psychology in 2008. In addition to working in the clinical setting, Shona attends workplaces giving presentations or working with management, individuals and groups and offers support in response to critical incidents. |
Shona has a special interest in providing relationship counselling and supporting people living in rural and remote areas. In addition to her psychology qualifications, Shona has a post graduate diploma in Agriculture and she lived on a cattle and cropping farm for many years. Shona has experienced drought and flood first-hand and understands the personal and psychological impact of these natural events.
Growing up in a transient household with a father in mining, she has an appreciation of the issues involved for families with this lifestyle, both for the worker and their family. In her private practice, Shona has provided services to many FIFO workers and their families; this has particularly been focused on couple’s therapy due to the relationship stresses that often arise due to the complexities the couples face in this sector of the community.
Having lived in a small rural centre, Shona understands the lack of services these locations have. Although Shona has long since moved into a larger regional centre and recently to Sydney, she endeavours to continuously offer high-quality support to the rural and remote regions of Australia.
The main therapeutic modalities used by Shona are EMDR and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. However, rather than adhering to a methodology, Shona tries to get a sense of what will suit each client to best assist them in achieving their desired outcomes.
Shona has also completed an intensive training and support program in Prolonged Exposure therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Prolonged Exposure therapy has the highest level of research evidence of all treatments for PTSD. Research studies have shown that Prolonged Exposure therapy significantly reduces the symptoms of PTSD, depression, anger, and anxiety in survivors of various traumatic events, including assault, child abuse, combat, motor vehicle accidents and disasters.
